A Glimpse of Our Rehearsals

“As the website progress, I’d like to highlight exactly what Dhol Effect does on a weekly basis.”

Our Typical Practice

As a relatively-seasoned member of the Dhol Effect, my mission today is to help you see what I see. The sounds I hear. The emotions I feel when the perfect chord strikes, when a harmony synchronizes when the Dhol’s power ripples throughout the classroom.

“Our rehearsals piece together the inner workings of all our minds, connecting songs, music styles and our own sounds to make our set.”

From my experience from September 2018 to present-day (Spring 2020), rehearsals have been, to say the least, controlled chaos. Spirited ideas fly left and right, YouTube plays in the background, transposing instrumentalists huddle around the vocalists– all bundled up into a Rutgers academic classroom. Yet, among this chaos come genius mashups, laced with fun vocals, instrumental improvisation, and pure synergy. We pick our songs, we figure out the chords and the rest is history. Since we have performances booked almost every week, it’s important to adjust to our audiences and what they’d resonate with. We “hand-pick” our songs for each performance.

“Because of the talent of our members, each able to adjust, improvise and ornament, our music is fresh-sounding and energetic.”
