“If music wakes you up, makes you think, heals you… then, I guess, the music is working.”
A.R. Rahman
Dhol Effect is RU’s only South-Asian fusion band, performing at cultural and charity events all over campus. We spread culture by mixing South-Asian and Western styles through our talented vocalists and instrumentalists, all highlighted by the founding instrument, the Dhol. Our purpose is to reimagine Desi musical culture in a modern, Western context, striving to cultivate appreciation and awareness for the regional music of South Asia. Simultaneously, we hope to provide a network for student members to refine their musical abilities through mentorship.

Dhol Effect is dedicated to a future full of musical authenticity, exploration, creativity, and philanthropy. If you have a talent you want to share with the world, you deserve to explore it. Members understand the healing power of music and strive to create a safe space for student musicians to advance their own musical aspirations.
Performing at Rutgers University is a new experience every year. Opening for acts like Pav Dharia, Mickey Singh, TwinBeatz, and more, Rutgers University Dhol Effect has made ripples in the performance world. This is a once-in-a-lifetime impact that any passionate musician of any skill level can make. It’s your time.

“Being in RUDE was a dream since high school. I joined RUDE at a time when it had an all-time low of members and at one point, everyone who was left graduated and moved on. I worked on cultivating the group again as President with the help of Akash and Abby. I’ve seen many faces come and go in RUDE, but I’ve been so grateful that the same ones have stuck like glue throughout my last year as a student.”
Shyam Lalani, Class of 2020
“RUDE was easily the best part of my college experience. Before joining in my freshman year, I had never sung on stage before. In the span of four years, RUDE has helped me discover my voice and open up to music. I will forever be grateful to have been part of such an amazing and talented team. I’m extremely sad about graduating but I’m happy that I’m leaving with lifelong friends. I love my team.”
Jyoti Borate, Class of 2020

“I restarted RUDE when I was a freshman. I never thought that I along with my best friends, Shyam and Abby, that could start a club from nothing and grow it to something truly amazing. We’ve met so many amazing people, went on trips together, and created a safe haven for all the kids in RUDE. This is more to me than just a club, this is my family. It is so sad to leave this behind but I trust that the newbies will carry on the legacy of what we created.”
Akash Kedari, Class of 2020
